St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra

  • 16th September 2019
  • 8.30pm
  • LAC, Theater room

Few orchestras can boast a historical background as prestigious the St. Petersburg Philharmonic's and embody such a sense of tradition rooted in romantic symphonicism while maintaining its own sharp sound and style identity. Yuri Temirkanov has added his personal touch of deep understanding between conductor and musicians and an interpretative vision that ensures that each concert he conducts is a unique musical experience. This is sure to be the case with a programme built on masterpieces such as Mahler's First Symphony and Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto played by the outstanding pianist Nelson Freire.

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig

  • 21st October 2019
  • 8.30pm
  • LAC, Theater room

Alone the presence of Mendelssohn on the rostrum and the Leipzig premieres of works by Schubert, Schumann and Wagner are enough to rank the Gewandhausorchester among the world's finest orchestral ensembles. But that would not account for the velvety sound of the orchestra's strings and the powerful sound of its brass and woodwind instruments. These qualities are enhanced by Andris Nelsons, whose musical direction can grant for extraordinary performances in the wake of the great symphonic tradition. The first of his two concerts associates the inexhaustible impetus of Schubert's last symphony with the kaleidoscopic creativity of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto, entrusted to Rudolf Buchbinder's expert fingers.

  • 23th October 2019
  • 8.30pm
  • LAC, Theater room

Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony was first performed by the Gewandhausorchester under the composer, as was the Prelude to Wagner's Meistersinger. The latter, who was equally at home in Leipzig, will appear in this concert with the Overture to The Flying Dutchman. The piece will share the bill with Blumine, a luminous Andante that Mahler removed from his First Symphony to let it shine its own light on the music scene. It precedes Schumann's Cello Concerto performed by Gautier Capuçon, this season's Artist-in-residence who ranks among the century's star cellists.
